A conversation with a young lady with whom a lovely connection has been established over the last couple of years, set this blog rolling. Every conversation we both have is so different and there is much thought and perspective exchanged..
Two statements she made has been doing the loops in my mind.
First statement – The music of the musician, speaks of who the person is.
Every performance of a musician is a carefully curated one. The play list is drawn after a lot of thought in the musician’s mind. This can undergo changes thru the days that run up to the performance. The changes can be due to various factors that only the musician knows. Why, on the stage what they perform could have been a spontaneous one (that wasn’t in the plan at all)!!
As I was mulling over her statement, a question arose in me (Nothing surprising, knowing me :-)) and some answers too (or so I think :-))
– What of the person, does the music reveal?
– If it is a set of pieces / songs that have a commonality, they have a theme in their mind and that’s easy to tell
– If the performance is technology enabled, it could mean that they are guided by it and believe in it
– If they involve the audience (in a live performance), they perhaps like to engage with the audience and make a connect with them.. In a recorded performance, how they engage with the audience can be in the feeling that is triggered in the listener and that’s also an engagement
– How the musician immerses himself or herself to in a part of the performance or the complete one, speaks of the passion they have to a few songs / pieces or the entirety of it. Every musician gives themselves to the entire performance but sometimes, some parts of it is special for reasons known to the musician and that lends its own flavour
I am sure there is much more than all this that tells us ‘who the person’ in the musician is (a tip of the iceberg of the person they are :-)).. I wonder if that is why we love performances of some musicians and not that of some – they resonate with the person we are or dissonate with the person we are.. There are also days when we resonate with a musician we generally dissonate with or vice versa. Perhaps that day something about ‘who the person in the musician is’ struck a chord in us!! Interesting that there is a piece of us in every person we come in touch with!!
We are all different and yet similar in one way or the other!!! Such a beautiful way to look at life!!!!
Second statement – Every person who enters into our space, changes the space.
There isn’t anything good or bad about the change that is brought in the space, by the entry of the person. Each one of us bring our own flavours by the person we are, into the space. We enter the space as a whole – with and without our masks; and either way, the space is changed.
It would indeed be powerful to say that the space we enter reveals the person we are, to ourselves, assuming we are ready to face the revelation.
It would be truthful to say that the space we enter, has the power to change the person we are, assuming we are ready for the change.
While with every person who enters, the space changes, it is interesting to note how the space retains its power and spirit, with all the different entries made. Any exits made from the space could be because that space doesn’t fit them or because they need to move away physically, though mentally they are still in that space. This is perhaps why, when they return later to the space, it appears as though they have never left it!!
As I penned this blog, I realised that I was mentally toggling between both the statements that this young lady made. While both the statements were independent statements, there is a connection between the two..
Be it a skill or a profession or a hobby or a passionate activity we are engaged in, each one of them is a space. Each one of these spaces say ‘who we are’ and every space is changed when we enter it. Each space we enter, also reveals to us who we are.
Just as every drop contributes to an ocean, each one of us contribute to a space.. each one of us change it by who we are.. each one of us can be changed to who we can be / need to be..
What a powerful universe we live in, with our own power that is known and unknown!!! The power to change and to be changed!!!

Some people go in search of spaces to energize themselves.
Some others energize the spaces they are in.

And both are ok in their own ways, I guess…
