I am always fascinated seeing people with their tattoos and have many a question to them – why a tattoo, what tattoo, how many tattoos, why this tattoo etc etc etc..

In the same manner, a couple of days back when I saw a couple of 20 / 21 year olds, with tattoos in their hands, one tattoo inked just a few hours earlier, I shot out these questions to them. One of them was talking also about a name change that she brought in to herself. When I asked her what was the reason for her to choose that name, pat came her answer, “You don’t need a reason for everything.” When the other one heard this, he also said something similar. I realised that they could mean that for the tattoo or the name change or for many a thing in life!!

Both of them are pretty candid in the way they speak and since I have known them from the time they were toddlers, their candidness was with no holds barred :-). I immediately told them that I am a person who needs a reason for everything. This conversation set me thinking, especially my statement to them which in turn raised questions in me..

– Do I really need a reason for everything I do? The answer was a yes and no..

– Don’t I do certain things without much of a thought? Some impulsive and some spontaneous?

– The impulsive action isn’t bound to have a reason and as for the spontaneous action – it will not have a reason at the time of the action, as intuition will drive the action; later on, I would surely know what made me act intuitively and spontaneously.

This statement of these two youngsters “You don’t need a reason for everything.” made me bucket many of my actions into how I have acted

– with a surefire reason

– in intuition and spontaniety

– because I like it / love it

– I don’t know why I do it but doing it makes me happy and so I do it..

The first of the above is self-explanatory and could be excluded.. The last three however, don’t seem to have a reason and yet do. Intuition has something behind it but what it is, isn’t really known.. So it is for liking / loving to do something or because doing something brings happiness..

While there are many many actions of mine where the last three played a role, two incidents instantly came to my mind (no reason for why they came :-)..

One – Many years back, my friend’s pet dog came running into their home, bleeding heavily from her leg. She was howling, running in circles and refused to allow any of us to go near her. It was also seeming to us that she was crying out for help. It was just me and my friend’s home help who were available at that time, who could rush out. So my friend’s home help and me quickly bundled my friend’s pet dog into my car and took her to the vet clinic, which was half hour away (and it was a process of almost an hour and half for the wound to be cleaned, stitches put and dressing done). It was such an instinctive and spontaneous action for us to rush out to the vet clinic. There was absolutely no other thought at all – either about how the pet dog will react when we carry her to the car or in the car or the fact that neither of us knew anything about taking immediate care of an injured animal. All we knew was that we needed to rush out.  The fundamental reason may have been to help a living being but it was surely more than that – You don’t need a reason for everything.

Two – I have had many people asking me why I joined the Ninjutsu class. It isn’t to learn self-defense.. it isn’t something that was in my to-do list.. My answer is “I don’t have a reason but being in the class makes me happy. I love being in the class.” Isn’t that reason enough? Yes it is but it is also much much more to it than that, which I don’t really know – You don’t need a reason for everything.

Very strangely, suddenly my fingers did a ctrl B for the sentence that is in bold in the last two paras.. It just did – why did it do? Well, it just did… You don’t need a reason for everything.

Life is to be lived and loved – for no rhyme or reason!!

What we do in happiness, we do – for no rhyme or reason!!

Life isn’t asking for one, who and what do we need the reason for?
